Iyunola Adekanye

Partner in the Energy and Project Finance, Dentons ACAS-Law

Iyunola Adekanye is a Partner in the Energy and Project Finance group at Dentons ACAS-Law and Co-Sector Lead for Dentons Energy Africa. With over 15 years of experience, she advises on transactions spanning energy, mining, power, finance, and infrastructure, working with governments, multinationals, and local clients on complex, high-impact projects.

 

Her practice covers energy financing, acquisitions, divestments, joint ventures, regulatory compliance, and strategic alliances. She is recognised as a Rising Star Partner in the Project Development – Energy category by IFLR1000 and is listed as a Recommended legal practitioner by Lexology Index (formerly Who’s Who Legal) in its National report for Nigeria in the Energy, Natural Resources and Mining category, and the Global Practice Area reports for Energy, Mining, and Project Finance.

 

Iyunola regularly contributes to thought leadership on Nigeria’s energy sector, including papers on “Recent Policies enabling Energy Investments in Nigeria” (June 2022) and “Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) - A viable alternative fuel in Nigeria” (March 2025). She has authored publications in international journals, such as "Nigeria’s Untapped Treasures: Its Growth and Investment Potential,” published by Hogan Lovells (July 2020) and “Riding the Wave of Renewable Energy: Exploring the Power of Carry Arrangements in the Green Industry” published by Oxford University Press (December 2023).

 

Iyunola also contributed to Africa Energy 2024 by Global Business Reports (GBR), where she shared insights on significant development and legislative changes in the Nigerian energy sector (October 2024) and was a panel speaker at the Gas Investment Forum, where she discussed “Optimizing Nigeria’s Gas Infrastructure & Incentivizing Investment” (October 2024).

 

Iyunola currently serves as a board member of Flutterwave Technology Solutions Limited and is the Chairperson of its Governance and Nominations Committee. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Trustees for Transcend Educational Empowerment Initiative - an education-focused non-profit organization.

 

Beyond her board engagements, Iyunola plays a pivotal role within Dentons, serving as the Dentons Africa Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Council Representative. Additionally, she is the Women Negotiators Group (WNG) Representative for the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) Africa Chapter.

 

Iyunola holds an LLB from Coventry University and an MSc in Finance and Financial Law (Distinction) from SOAS, University of London, and is admitted to the Nigerian Bar. She is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN), and an Associate Member of the Nigerian Gas Association.
